Question of the month: can you paint over Zinsser® PermaWhite?

As the name suggests, PermaWhite is only available in white. But what if you want to combine the unique qualities of PermaWhite with a nice colour? Is that possible? Can you paint over PermaWhite? We asked Zinsser expert Gianni.

PermaWhite is a mould-resistant primer and topcoat in one that keeps ceilings, walls and other paintable interior surfaces in damp areas looking bright white. We asked Zinsser expert Gianni about the unique qualities of the product before asking him the big question: can you paint over PermaWhite?

When is PermaWhite the best choice?

Gianni: “Due to its mould resistance, PermaWhite is ideal for environments that could promote the growth of fungus and damage the paint layer. Think of rooms with permanently high humidity, frequent temperature fluctuations or poor ventilation.”

PermaWhite is available in a matt and satin finish. Which should you choose?

Gianni: “Both versions offer the same lasting protection against mould. The difference is mainly aesthetic. PermaWhite Matt is ideal for rooms where you want less shine, such as living rooms. PermaWhite Satin is most often used for rooms prone to condensation or rooms that require frequent cleaning. For example, bathrooms and laundry rooms."

Can you paint over PermaWhite?

Gianni: "That's a good question, with a nuanced answer. Yes, you can paint over PermaWhite, but then it will lose its properties. And mould resistance is exactly why you choose PermaWhite. If you paint over PermaWhite and your new topcoat is not mould-resistant, you will negate all the benefits of PermaWhite. Mould can still grow on the topcoat and the paint may continue to peel off."

What if you want mould resistance and a nice colour?

Gianni: “PermaWhite comes standard in white, but it can be tinted to light and medium shades using the ColourShop tinting system. Looking for a really dark colour? Then you can opt for Zinsser® Allcoat Interior Matt: a high-quality, matt primer and topcoat in one. Allcoat Interior Matt also has some mould-resistant properties. However, we don’t recommend it for areas with regular moisture or steam. Allcoat is porous and not moisture-sealed like PermaWhite. This means you risk the paint peeling off because the moisture can penetrate and wet the underlying surface. For the best results in damp areas, it’s always better to choose PermaWhite.”
